Punk rock lives in Seattle at the Clock-Out Lounge
In my formative years living in Burien. I started seriously listening to the radio when I was in junior high. KJR was my radio station of choice. It was Top 40 and, in those days, KJR ruled the Seattle market. As I got older, my musical tastes changed, and I discovered KOL FM. Back in those days, we would call it an underground FM radio station. It was remarkable to listen to. It was not unusual for them to play single sides or even a complete album from front to back, especially in the evening. The first time I heard Steve Miller was on KOL FM. Other groups that were just a blip on the scenery had a home there.
This is probably one of the reasons why my musical tastes are so eclectic. I even listened to punk rock every once in a while, although I wasn't enthralled by it like many people were. Punk rock was the sound of rebellion, Against a rebellious generation of rockers. They were rebelling against the concept of “style before substance”. Maybe I was just uneducated, but I would have never thought that one of Dave Grohl's major influences in music was the punk rock scene in Washington, DC for instance.
Over the years, I'm sure that Seattle embraced punk rock in various venues in the Seattle area but there is one venue that has truly come to the forefront. (Especially for local players.)
And that brings us to Beacon Hills Clock-Out Lounge. A home to punk rock, local musicians, comedy, even a trivia night and don't forget the pizza is to die for. (Stevie’s Famous) The Clock-Out Lounge has been around for the last seven plus years. Jodi Eckland is the owner.
The concert history goes back to March of 2018. Starting with “Christine”. Not every night is a music night, but when there are music nights, typically you'll have 3 bands booked and Jodi knows the music scene in Seattle almost better than anyone, and it's very selective about the talent that she brings in. She has to be careful to balance the size of the act with the size of the room so that you can at least break even with the band.
She brings a lot of Seattle music history with her to the Clock-Out Lounge and has made a fair amount of Seattle music history there as well.
