The longtime Wenatchee Wild Hockey PA announcer Ernie Rodriguez passed away Saturday morning, July 15th at home in East Wenatchee. His wife Lisa shared the news with friends on social media. Rodriguez had suffered health issues for several years and entered hospice care at home to be with family in recent days.

There was a significant buzz in the building at Town Toyota Center throughout the season as well, with 69,462 fans filing in for the 26 home games, an average of 2,672 per game. That marked the second-highest figure in the league and highest total for the Wild at the gate since 2017-18

The Wenatchee Wild were one of the last eight teams standing in the British Columbia Hockey League postseason, but the Penticton Vees will be the team continuing its quest for the Fred Page Cup after their Interior Conference semifinal meeting Wednesday at Town Toyota Center.

Penticton used a four-goal first period to jump into the driver’s seat and claim a 7-0 Game Two victory, taking a two-game lead in the best-of-seven series with Wenatchee. The teams return to Wenatchee for games 3 and four this week.

Special teams made the difference, with each team putting away a power play goal and the Vees adding a shorthanded tally for the 3-1 final, as Penticton grabs the series opener with Wenatchee. The win was Penticton’s 37th consecutive victory on home ice, dating back to last season’s run to the Fred Page Cup championship.

The conference semifinal series is a best-of-seven affair, with the Vees to potentially host four of the seven games, including the first two games on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15. The series shifts to Wenatchee for a pair of weeknight games on Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19.
