Candy corn, some people love it, some people hate it. It's been around for over 100 years. Here is the abridged version of the story of candy corn. Wikipedia says, "Chicken Feed" was the original candy name, with production starting in the late 1880s. It was first invented in the 1880s by a Wunderle Candy Company employee, George Renninger.

Wunderle Candy Company was the first to produce the candy in 1888. The Goelitz Confectionery Company (now called Jelly Belly) began manufacturing the product in 1898. While Jelly Belly still makes candy corn, the largest manufacturer of candy corn is Brach’s Confections owned by the Ferrara Candy Company.”

According to Wikipedia, “Brach's makes approximately 7 billion pieces of candy corn per year and possesses 85 percent of the total share of the candy corn industry during the Halloween season.” On Amazon, you can buy a 5-pound bag of candy corn.

Over the last several years we have also seen variations of candy corn like candy pumpkins pop up. The latest innovation which I saw at Winco Foods on Sunday, was the candy pumpkin with a big bulging eye in the middle. I must say it was a little disconcerting, whoever did the artwork for the eyeball was really quite good Makes the candy pumpkin with the eyeball a little disturbing. Perfect for the office.

I also saw something that I thought was actually kind of cute. A candy corn plush pillow.

I like to have candy corn out and available, just to see the look on people's faces when I offer it to them.

The Totally Legit But Totally Unscientific Halloween Candy Poll

I polled a few coworkers to see what the favorite candy for Halloween is for them. It was all good until the fight broke out over candy corn. None were severely injured, except for a bruised ego or two. Might need to watch my lunches in the break room fridge for the next couple of weeks though.
